Synergy via Redundancy: Adaptive Replication Strategies and Fundamental Limits

چکیده

The maximum possible throughput (or the rate of job completion) a multi-server system is typically sum service rates individual servers. Recent work shows that launching multiple replicas and canceling them as soon one copy finishes can boost throughput, especially when time distribution has high variability. This means redundancy can, in fact, create synergy among servers such their overall greater than seeks to find fundamental limit achieved by replication optimal policy achieve it. While most previous works consider upfront policies, we expand set policies delayed launch replicas. search for adaptive be formulated Markov Decision Process, using which propose two myopic MaxRate AdaRep, adaptively replicate jobs. Synergy, Redundancy and Common Information

We consider the problem of decomposing the total mutual information conveyed by a pair of predictor random variables about a target random variable into redundant, unique and synergistic contributions. We focus on the relationship between “redundant information” and the more familiar informationtheoretic notions of “common information.” Our main contribution is an impossibility result. We show ...

Unequal Error Protection: Some fundamental limits and optimal strategies

Various scenarios are considered where some information is more important than other and needs better protection. A general theoretical framework for unequal error protection is developed in terms of exponential error bounds. It provides some fundamental limits and optimal strategies for such problems. A new class of problems called message-wise unequal error protection is also analyzed. Even f...

Spectrum Sensing Via Reconfigurable Antennas: Fundamental Limits and Potential Gains

We propose a novel paradigm for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks that provides diversity and capacity benefits using a single antenna at the Secondary User (SU) receiver. The proposed scheme is based on a reconfigurable antenna: an antenna that is capable of altering its radiation characteristics by changing its geometric configuration. Each configuration is designated as an antenna...

Synergy, redundancy, and independence in population codes.

A key issue in understanding the neural code for an ensemble of neurons is the nature and strength of correlations between neurons and how these correlations are related to the stimulus. The issue is complicated by the fact that there is not a single notion of independence or lack of correlation. We distinguish three kinds: (1) activity independence; (2) conditional independence; and (3) inform...

Synergy and redundancy among brain cells

Naftali Tishby t NEC Research Institute 4 Independence Way Princeton N J 08540 Determining the relationship between the activity of a single nerve cell to that of an entire population is a fundamental question that bears on the basic neural computation paradigms. In this paper we apply an information theoretic approach to quantify the level of cooperative activity among cells in a behavioral co...
